CECP: Counselor Education: Community Counseling

Master of Arts (MA)

Program Benefits

Western Michigan University’s Masters Program in Community Counseling is nationally accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (www.cacrep.org).

Community Counseling offers three counseling specialties/elective areas (students pick one):

  • Alcohol and Drug Abuse
  • Holistic Health Care
  • Marriage and Family Therapy (not offered in Traverse City)

Each approved specialty program requires a 600 clock hour supervised field practicum.  A minimum of 240 of the 600 clock hours must be in a direct service to clients appropriate to the specialty program and the setting.  Students eligible for the professional field placement should consult with their academic advisor regarding appropriateness of the proposed site.

All graduates of community counseling are eligible for licensure as a Professional Counselor.  Being a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) enables the WMU graduate to practice professionally outside the agency setting.

The program may be completed in two and a half years, taking classes  on a year round basis.  The classes in Traverse City are scheduled with the working adult in mind.  Most students taking classes here also work full time so classes are scheduled on weekends and evenings.
